OSMANTHUS ABSOLUTE
Osmanthus fragrans
Osmanthus is a small, highly aromatic ornamental tree of the Lilac family. It is at home in China and Japan, where it is often planted as a street tree. In the late summer or early autumn, the flowers appear in dense clusters and their indescribable scent of ripe apricots and peaches perfumes the streets.
Traditional
In China, Osmanthus flowers are used to flavour green and black tea, and to make a syrup or jam to flavour dumplings, desserts and cakes. Medicinally, Osmanthus flowers are used in Chinese medicine to treat an irregular menstruation cycle.
Osmanthus Absolute is solvent extracted. Osmanthus is much used in perfumery and an ingredient of many high-class blends. Although it is said to lift the spirit and reduce stress and anxiety, it is not usually used in aromatherapy.
Magical
Osmanthus is associated with the Moon and is said to have magical self-healing powers. It can be worked into an amulet for regeneration and restoration when energies are low or depleted. In magical perfumery, it can be used in blends to help combat the effects of burn-out, stress and anxiety.
Scent
The scent of the essential oil is more complex than that of the fresh flowers. It is intensely sweet, fruity and floral, but there is also a more earthy, leathery note. It is not an easy oil to use as it gets drowned out easily. It blends well with Sandalwood, Bergamot, Ambrette Seed, Davana, Patchouli, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Rose, Petitgrain, Neroli, Champaca, Angelica, Tuberose and Vetivert.
